Reopening Information

  • Message from the Director

Like many of you we at the Rec Center have been ready and waiting for the day we could return. Today we’re happy to say that the wait will soon be over because the Pohl Recreation Center will reopen at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1. Specific details of the reopening can be found below.

We have always been committed to the health and safety of our Rec Center community, and that commitment remained our top priority as we developed new safety standards and guidelines to be implemented throughout the facility upon reopening. As confident as we are that these new processes will help ensure the well-being of our members and staff, we also know they will inevitably change as we receive updates from state and local officials. We will continue to evaluate and modify our standards in order to proudly keep our commitment to the health and safety of both the Rec Center and University community.

We’ve also been listening to you, and during this time we’ve restructured how memberships can be purchased by creating a monthly recurring payment option as well as developing a new Rec Sports app that will launch in the coming weeks. All of this on top of the myriad of virtual programs and videos our staff have worked tirelessly to produce, including this reopening video viewable on our Rec Sports YouTube website at https://youtu.be/FhIkfQbg_EY.

As we move through June and into the July reopening we cannot forget that the fluidity of the situation will require patience, flexibility, and a renewed sense of responsibility for the welfare of the entire UNT family from each and every one of us. It will take all of us acting individually and together, responsibly and purposefully, to keep the doors of the Rec Center open and ourselves, loved ones, and each other healthy and safe.

It might be a bit overwhelming at first. Things will look different and the typical routines we’ve been used to will need to be adjusted. But trust us: as soon as you walk through our doors you’ll find yourself in that familiar place we all know and love. The Rec Center you’ve been missing will be ready and waiting for you – now even safer—and we can’t wait to welcome you back.

Laurie Klein - Director of Recreational Sports

  • May 13 | Reopening Information

The State of Texas has announced that gyms may reopen on Monday, May 18 at 25% capacity. Although we are eager to open, the safety of our university community is our priority. We are hard at work developing safety protocols to ensure that our students and members have a safe and healthy experience once we open. We will communicate our opening plan once it is finalized.

  • May 4 | Locker Information

We want to update you on what is happening with lockers as the Spring semester winds to a close.

    1) If you do not wish to access your locker at this point, you do not have to.

    2) For those with a locker set to expire May 9, 2020, your expiration date is automatically being extended to August 7, 2020.

    3) For everyone currently renting a locker and wanting to claim the contents you'll be able to do so on:

    Thursday, May 7 8:00am-5:00pm
    Friday, May 8 8:00am-5:00pm
    Saturday, May 9 10:00am-2:00pm
    Sunday, May 10 10:00am-2:00pm

***PLEASE NOTE: Anyone entering the facility during this time is highly encouraged to supply and wear a covering over their mouth and nose. Rec Sports will supply gloves to those wanting them. For the safety of everyone the Rec Sports staff on hand will be wearing face coverings and gloves. Only 20 people will be allowed inside the facility at a time with only 2 people at a time in each locker room. We kindly request that everyone acknowledge and follow proper social distancing protocols while at the Rec Center, and that you get in and out as quickly as possible. There will be no access to any areas in the Rec Center except the locker area of the locker rooms.

    4) We understand these dates and times may not work for everyone so we will be allowing you to send someone as a proxy to claim your items for you. If you are sending a proxy you will need to email the proxy's first and last name to Ryan Comfort at rcomfort@unt.edu by 4pm the day PRIOR to your proxy coming to claim your items. The proxy will need to bring a picture ID with them to be able to access your locker. Rec Sports will not give locker numbers or combinations to a proxy.

    5) Rec Sports also understands not everyone will be comfortable entering the facility to clear their locker. This will be handled on a case by case basis. Please contact Ryan Comfort at rcomfort@unt.edu to discuss your options.

    6) For those unable to get their items or send a proxy on these dates know we will not be doing any locker cleanouts prior to August 7, 2020. After the August 7th cleanout we will hold all cleaned out locker items for 30 days. During this time you can claim your items yourself at the Member Services desk or you may send a proxy for your items by following the proxy rules set above. Rec Sports will not be shipping locker contents to you.

    7) If our closure continues to extend we will consider setting more opportunities to claim locker contents in the coming weeks.

    8) Please contact Ryan Comfort at rcomfort@unt.edu if you have any questions or want further information.
