Free Clinics

Not ready for a trip, but want to learn more about the outdoors? Free clinics are the perfect place to begin!

These specialty clinics and skill workshops are offered to provide on-site instruction in the fundamental skills necessary for safety and fun in the outdoors. Each clinic usually lasts one hour and helps to prepare, educate and inform participants on a wide variety of subjects. All clinics are FREE but must have registered participants to be conducted. Register at the Outdoor Pursuits Center by 4pm the day before the clinic date. Clinics are open to UNT students, faculty and staff, Rec. Center members and their guests.

Knots, February 16, 4pm

Nothing is more frustrating than being unable to tie a knot in a hurry, or not being able to get it undone when needed. Come learn a variety of knots, bends, and hitches that are very useful in both the outdoors and everyday life.

All About Campfires, February 21, 4pm

Campfires are one of the best parts of camping! This fun clinic teaches the basics of fire starting including structures, techniques, and safety.

Kayak Basics, February 29 & April 18, 4pm

This introduction covers basic strokes, t-rescues, wet exits and more. Perfect for both beginners and experienced kayakers!

Kayak Roll, March 1 & April 19, 4pm

These sessions are designed to introduce you to the sport of kayaking and to teach and improve kayak roll techniques. Whether it’s your first time in the water, or you feel you just need a few pointers, this is the place for you!

Climbing & Bouldering Techniques, March 6, 9pm

Interested in climbing but don't know where to start? Getting ready for the climbing competition and need some extra training time? Climb with an instructor who can show you basic climbing techniques and share helpful tips.

Map & Compass, March 14, 4pm

Learn basic map and compass skills useful during any outdoor experience! You will never find yourself stranded in the woods again!

Where to Go in North Texas, March 28, 4pm

Want to plan a trip close to home? This clinic will go over a variety of places to recreate in the area and provide you with the tools, information and handouts to find new places to explore around North Texas as well as help you plan your trip!

 What to Eat in the Woods, April 11, 4pm

Planning food for a backpacking trip, but tired of expensive freeze-dried meals and jerky? This clinic will survey some exciting food options you can consider when planning a meal for your next trip, be it a day hike or extended trek!
